Sharemarket Game Update

The volitility of the sharemarket in the last week is  highlighted evidence of the ongoing “two-speed” economy in Australia. Investors hoping for growth stimulus in the form of a cash rate cut would have been disappointed by the RBA’s decision last week to leave the cash rate unchanged at 4.25%. A number of economists are forecasting at least one rate cut this year, pointing to below average consumer sentiment and business confidence, as well as lower than expected approvals for housing finance. In particular, poor consumer sentiment and increasing saving rates have seen earnings in the discretionary retail sector stagnate or drop. This has impacted the share price of companies such as David Jones, Myer and Billabong.

Below are the rankings for Waverley Christian College at the close of day prices for March 14, 2012.

Billions erased in sharemarket’s worst day in a year

The Australian sharemarket has suffered its worst day since June last year as renewed worries about the strength of the global economy wiped about $33 billion off the value of the market.

At the close, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 106.9 points, or 2.3 per cent, at 4600.4, while the broader All Ordinaries index slumped 105.4 points, or 2.2 per cent, at 4683.2.

The size of the retreat is the most since almost 3 per cent was lopped off the market’s value on June 7, 2010.

All sectors closed in the red today, but losses were biggest among financials, down 2.6 per cent, and materials, which lost 2.3 per cent. Energy stocks also dropped 2.2 per cent, while industrials were 2.3 per cent lower.

Sharemarket Game Winners

Well done to everyone from WCC who participated in the ASX Sharemarket Game.

It has been difficult to increase portfolio values in this game. The sharemarket has been moving up and down quite considerably due to events such as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the Aussie dollar reaching record highs and a general uncertainty in the overall market.

In this Game

  • The All Ordinaries (XAO) ended up down just one percent  over the Game period
  • 25 per cent of players from WCC finished in profit (compared to 20% overall)
  • The average portfolio value at WCC was $48,966.14 (compared to $49,050 overall)
Final portfolio values for the top 100 players form WCC are shown below. Looks like Mr. Rouse managed to hold onto the lead in the end, closely followed by Joshua and Lachlan.

Sharemarket Game Final Update

The Sharemarket Game finished today and winners will be announced next week.

Click on ASX Rankings for the Top 100 players from Waverley Christian College as at the close of trading on Tuesday 10 May, 2011. This was the last time results were available before they were hidden by the ASX today.

After being down at the end of last week, the sharemarket made a strong comeback today with investors largely ignoring the detail in last night’s federal budget, and instead running with a solid lead from offshore markets. The All Ordinaries Index closed up 55 points to 4,858 and the ASX 200 gained just over 1.1 per cent to 4,780. Sharemarket game weekly update

We are now in the last few days of trading in the ASX Sharemarket Game. You do not have to cash in all of your shares on the final day if you do not want to, as it is the total portfolio value (cash plus shares) that syndicates are ranked on. You can continue trading right up until the market closes at 4pm on Wednesday, May 11. All the rankings will be hidden after the close of the Game so the ASX can finalise the winners. All will be revealed the following week on Thursday May 19.

The sharemarket has lost some ground this week after a weakening US dollar (after the killing of Osama bin Laden) and the anticipation of the Federal Budget on May 10.

As at the close of trade on Friday 6 May, it looks like Mr. Rouse has dropped to second place in the WCC rankings. However, there is another mystery teacher syndicate that has moved into first place at WCC.

ASX Sharemarket Game: Win yourself a $30 gift voucher

The ASX Sharemarket Game wants to hear from you about your experience with the game. They want to know what you have learnt? What mistakes you have made? How did you get started? They will award a $30 gift voucher to the most helpful Game feedback received over the next fortnight. Plus, it will be published in the next newsletter, just like Ben from Waverley Christian College. This is what Ben wrote … This week’s feedback is from Ben from Waverley Christian College…” I have learnt that the sharemarket is a very complicated business, and that much planning and observation is involved. I have also learnt that stock prices do not behave the way I want them to. I have to plan, observe, and try to predict as to what will happen next. This is tricky as the company announcements can be cryptic and hard to understand, and the way they influence the price may vary. Also, global events can have different effects on different types of companies. As with the crisis in Japan with the nuclear reactors going into meltdown, Paladin Energy’s share price (PDN), which is primarily a uranium mining company, went down quite drastically…Other companies share prices went up, though. The media and people’s opinions affect the share price of different companies a lot. The way the media represents how being green is good for example affects companies like Gunns (GNS) that do logging or Macarthur Coal (MCC) which mines coal…”
